Basophils

What are basophils and why are they important for health?

Basophils are a type of white blood cell involved in the immune response. They can recognise allergens and release histamine, a substance that causes inflammation and allergic reactions. Basophils normally make up less than 1% of white blood cells.

The percentage of basophils in the blood is called the basophil percentage. This value can be measured by a blood test called a differential blood count. A normal basophil percentage is between 0.5% and 1%. An increased or decreased basophil level can indicate various health conditions.

An increased basophil count may indicate an allergic reaction, an infection, an inflammation or a blood disease such as leukemia. A lowered basophil count may indicate an acute infection, a stress reaction or hyperthyroidism. However, basophil levels alone are not a meaningful biomarker for a particular disease. It must always be interpreted in the context of other blood values and symptoms.

If you have an abnormal basophil count, you should consult your doctor to determine the possible causes. Your doctor may recommend further tests or prescribe appropriate treatment. Basophils are an important part of the immune system and can help you stay healthy.
