Total protein

What does total protein say?

Total protein (TP) is a biomarker that measures the total amount of protein in the blood. Protein is an important building block for many bodily functions, such as building muscles, bones, skin and hair. Protein also helps fight off infections, regulate fluid balance and transfer oxygen and nutrients in the blood.

TP levels can provide information about nutritional status, liver and kidney function, the immune system and possible inflammation or infection. A TP test is often done together with other blood tests to get an overview of the general state of health.

Normal TP levels are between 6 and 8 grams per decilitre (g/dL). A low TP level may indicate malnutrition, liver or kidney disease, blood loss or chronic inflammation. A high TP level may indicate dehydration, chronic infection, autoimmune disease or a bone marrow tumour.

A TP test is not a specific test for a particular disease or condition. It must always be interpreted in the context of other blood values and the patient's symptoms and medical history. If you have any questions about your TP level, consult your doctor.
